Lord of the Flies by William Golding is about young boys - the oldest, 12 - who are stranded on a tropical island after a plane crash. The story takes place during World War II, when the boys are forced to leave England due to the threat of nuclear war. Ralph first meets Piggy, the logical one of the group; they find a conch in a lagoon on the island. As Ralph blows the conch, all the boys come to him. He is a natural leader. Although the boys hope to keep an orderly and democratic "government" through Ralph's leadership, without experienced guidance, they are slowly led to the more primitive and anarchic rule of Jack, the choir leader. Add to these three main characters Roger and Simon and our struggle for survival is set.
The SURVIVE project is one that will transport you to the island of the Lord of the Flies. There you will learn leadership, survival skills and the true nature of mankind.
William Golding felt that when men are faced with life or death situations, they revert to savage behaviors. Golding believed that humans are evil at their core, and that we are just waiting to jump at the chance to let evil overtake us. Ultimately, through the reading of Lord of the Flies and through your own research and introspection, you will make your own decision: are we good, or are we evil?
