Today you were given a quest for information to obtain either on the internet or through research in the media center. The internet is a remarkable tool, putting information on ANY topic into your hands instantly. But what you must also put into perspective is the quality of the information that you find online. There are no filters or monitors of fairness or truth; the internet is a virtual free for all, and that is the important lesson here. You must weed out the bad sources of information and utilize reliable sites through common sense, good judgement and thorough research.
As an example, today I asked that you research Pei Mei and the Exploding Heart Technique. How many of you, wise people, corrected my misspelling of the character Pai Mei? What's interesting is that if you input "Pei" Mei (the incorrect spelling) into the search engine, you will get information on the topic. (Indeed there are others out there in cyberland who cannot spell.) Unfortunately, the information received from the misspelled name is far inferior than that which can be found when the correction is made. The point is you must delve deeply into your research to ensure that the information you obtain is correct.
Wednesday we really begin to delve deeply into our Island of Misadventure. In Lord of the Flies we enter a world where survival, leadership and, most of all, communication are key to survival. First Tribe Points will be awarded first thing Wednesday morning, and we will complete chapter 1.
