2001, A Space Odyssey premiered in Hollywood in 1968. Half there proclaimed it a space ballet of beautiful imagery, of stark philosophical musings and allusions to Homer's The Odyssey and Nietzsche's Also Sprach Zarathustra.
The others sat bewildered. Some walked out. Among them, Rock Hudson stormed from the Pantages Theatre mumbling "What the hell is this about?" In 35 years nothing has changed. People hate it. People love it. No one says, "It was OK."
Try that Pink Floyd thing, by the way. Pretty cool. The set up is very simple: pause 2001 just before the title frame for "Jupiter & Beyond the Infinite," pause Meddle at the beginning of "Echoes," and unpause both audio and video at the same time. The beginning of the title frame should corresponds exactly with the first "ping" of "Echoes." As far as I know, unlike the components of "Dark Side of the Rainbow," there are no variant versions of 2001 or "Echoes" to complicate matters here.
The following are several links to 2001 sites and an excellent review by Roger Ebert:
This link in particular gives depth and structure to our understanding of the film. I have spent years with the film's meaning (ie note that man in space has regressed or devolved into eating baby food and must be "potty trained" all over again), but with this short film, it's all neatly summed up: Kubrick2001 (Flashplayer).
